"THE COLONY OF UNREQUITED DREAMS"
Upstart Ace to produce next McKellar film -- Playback magazine, Jan 8/02:
"Toronto producers Elliott Halpern and Jack Rabinovitch have parted ways with Associated Producers and opened a new production company, Ace Pictures. Under their new banner, Halpern, a two-time Emmy and five-time Gemini winner, and partner Rabinovitch will be exploring long-form fiction in addition to a full slate of documentaries. During their tenure with Associated the pair was known largely for their documentary efforts like The Plague Monkeys (which Halpern produced, wrote and directed).
The first feature out of Ace will be The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, a film based on the novel by Wayne Johnston about former Newfoundland premier Joe Smallwood. Ace has secured the rights to the book, which Halifax-based screenwriter Michael Amo (Blessed Stranger: After Flight 111) has adapted for the big screen.
Toronto actor/writer/director Don McKellar (Last Night) is attached to direct and possibly star in the film. Halpern and Ace's head of drama Brett Burlock will produce, with Jim Byrd on board as a Newfoundland production partner. According to Burlock, it is also expected that The Colony will be produced under the YAP banner, a joint venture between the Ace partners and U.K.-based Yorkshire Television cultivated in 1998, making it a Canada/U.K. coproduction.
Halpern says Ace is currently looking into development financing."

"I WAS A RAT" PREMIERES AT SPROCKETS
The SPROCKETS Toronto International Film Festival for Children recently opened with the world theatrical premiere of I Was A Rat, with Don in attendance at the soiree. But don't fret if you missed out - the film will be re-shown during the festival (which runs April 12 - April 21). Below is a synopsis of the film, taken from the festival's site:
I Was A Rat
Laurie Lynd
Canada/United Kingdom
2001 97 minutes Beta SP/Colour
English
AGES 8+
"I was a rat. Now I'm a boy." So says wet and bedraggled Roger when he winds up on the doorstep of Bob and Joan. To this gentle, childless couple, he seems an ordinary small boy (with a few ratlike habits). Soon, however, poor Roger is pursued by the "Daily Scourge" newspaper, a fairground owner who wants to put him in a freak show, and a mad scientist who thinks Roger is an alien. But Bob and Joan stand by Roger, even when it takes a bit of royal intervention to figure out who he really is - and thatís a surprise weíre not giving away!
Based on the best-selling book by Whitbread Award-winning author Philip Pullman, I Was a Rat stars Tom Conti as Bob, Brenda Fricker as Joan, newcomer Calum Worthy as Roger and Don McKellar as the fairground owner. Made on location in Toronto and London by director Laurie Lynd (Virtual Mom, SPROCKETS 2000) and adapted for the screen by Richard Carpenter (The Borrowers), I Was a Rat features a compelling story with a fairytale feel and plenty of humour and heart at its core.

TORONTO LIFE PORTRAIT ISSUE
The November 2001 issue of Toronto Life magazine features a portrait portfolio of 50 stage and screen actors from and around the Toronto area (reminiscent of the special photo issues produced by Vanity Fair). Don is featured on the cover, and also has a similar two-page spread as well. Here's the blurb accompanying his portrait:
"HOME BOY: DON MCKELLAR -- Ten years ago, Canadian film took a sharp turn with Highway 61. Written by and starring a goofy, unassuming guy-next-door type named Don McKellar, the rocked-out road trip had a wry Gen X humour and manic energy to spare. McKellar played Pokey Jones, a trumpet-toting small-town barber who's swept off his feet by an impatient punk siren. It's no surprise that the unlikely pair, while delivering a corpse and a bundle of cocaine to New Orleans, fall in love. That's what happens in movies. The surprise came in the wake of the film's debut: perhaps for the first time, it was clear that a funny Canadian movie didn't need to be as crass as Porky's or be made by Lorne Michaels. Pokey Jones was tongue tied and just a little dim. But like deadpan Patrick in Last Night and snide, agoraphobic Curtis in Twitch City, he's genuine. McKellar's brand of satire is sly and barbed, but his characters, however typically Canadian in their self-deprication, are drawn with affection. They're guys we know and can't help but like.
Selected credits: acted in more than a dozen films, including Waydowntown, eXistenZ, Exotica; has written five features and one TV series and co-written a musical play; directed Last Night"

DON IN RUB & TUG
Don will be appearing in a small-budget Canadian film titled "Rub & Tug" - a film which has been described as a "female fantasy about massage girls who take over the parlour where they work." Don will play a "geeky poli-sci grad student" hired to manage the parlour by its overworked owner.
